How to become a member of Afya Sacco

This article is about how to become a member of Afya Sacco. Afya Sacco is a democratic, member-led, self-help financial institution registered on May 8, 1971. It is the fifth largest sacco in Kenya with an asset base of over 20.87 billion. It currently has more than 38,000 members, with many branches around Kenya.

Qualifications for Afya Sacco Membership


The following groups of people qualify to sign up as members;

  • Employees of the Ministry of Health, other governmental and parastatal ministries.
  • Employees of Afya Savings and Credit Cooperative Society and its subsidiaries.
  • Kenya Council of Nurses and Midwives staff.
  • All quasi-governmental institutions under the Ministry of Health, namely KEMRI, KETRI, Kenyatta National Hospital and Kenya Medical Training College.
  • Workers of healthcare organizations registered in Kenya.
  • Former members who have resigned but hold shares in Afya Investments Co-operative Society Limited.
  • Retired members can maintain their membership as long as they continue to contribute minimum monthly dues of Kshs 3,000.


How to become a member of Afya Sacco

  1. Fill in the required membership application by attaching a photocopy of the last pay slip, 2 passport-size photographs and a photocopy of the National Identity Document.
  2. Employees of government and healthcare organizations will, in addition to (a), obtain a letter of commitment from the employer indicating their willingness to deduct from salary and remit dues to the company on behalf of the applicant.
  3. Payment of a share contribution of not less than Kshs 500 up to a total of Kshs 20,000, monthly deposits of Kshs 5,000, membership fees of Kshs 1,000 (one time) and an additional Kshs 300 to the Afya Benevolent Fund.
  4. The duly completed membership forms will be sent to the nearest branch for recommendation and subsequent transmission to the head office.
  5. The shareholders are also free to withdraw from the company when they wish. Withdrawal can occur due to death, voluntary resignation or retirement.
