How to file KRA returns online

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to file a KRA return online from 2022. Anyone with a KRA PIN will have to file their tax return at the end of each year.

Those who are unemployed and do not have a lot of income will have to pay the restitution. This process takes less time as it is done online through the iTax platform.

How to file KRA returns online

1. Visit the KRA iTax website https://itax.kra.go.ke/KRA-Portal/

2. Log in to the iTax Portal with your KRA PIN and password

3. Scroll to the navigation bar and select Return.

4. Scroll to the bottom and click return file.

5. A page with different types of taxes to be paid will appear. Select the correct tax service that applies to you and click next.

Your tax form will open, depending on the tax rate you selected in the previous step.

6. The tax form shown has detailed instructions and will guide you through the filling process.

7. The page contains instructions to open and a link to download the tax form in Excel and ODS format. Download the template and open it or save it to your device.

8. Fill the required information in the downloaded form properly and save the form.

9. Enable macros to support and compress your files.

10. Return to the iTax File Returns page and select the period for which you are filing your tax return.

11. Download the file (zip file), accept the terms and conditions.

12. Click Submit. A pop-up message will appear to confirm if you want to download the model. Click OK.

13. Confirmation information will be issued if your return is successfully submitted.

How to apply for free/Nil returns 2022

1. Go to KRA iTax website https://itax.kra.go.ke/KRA-Portal/
2. Log in using your KRA PIN and password. Answer the security question correctly, then click connect.
3. Scroll to the navigation bar and select Return. Different options will be displayed. Choose an empty return file.
4. A tax liability page will appear. Enter your KRA PIN. Click on Tax resident. Click next to continue.
5. Select the return time and click submit.
6. A successful submission message will appear along with an acceptance number.

7. Download and print the return receipt.
