1. kakuma

Kakuma is the largest refugee camp in the world. It was founded in 1992 and currently hosts more than 180,000 people. It is administered by the UNHCR in collaboration with the Kenyan government. Most of the inhabitants come from South Sudan and Somalia. They were expelled from their countries due to the civil war. Refugees from South Sudan are the largest occupants of the camp. Its population is estimated at 100,000, followed by Somalis, who number around 50,000. 

2. Dadaab

Dadaab is a refugee camp complex housing thousands of refugees from countries such as Somalia, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Burundi. According to the UNHCR, it had a population of 218,873 registered refugees and asylum-seekers as of July 2020. Below are the various fields that are part of the Dadaab complex. 

3. hagadera

Hagadera is the second largest refugee camp in the world and the largest in the Dadaab camp complex. The camp is home to more than 100,000 refugees, mostly from Somalia, a country that has seen years of war and threats from militant groups. 

4. dagahaley

Dagahaley refugee camp was established in 1992 and hosts around 90,000 people, mostly refugees from Somalia. The camp was established primarily to house refugees affected by the Somali civil war. The camp is congested and overcrowded, a situation that has pushed some refugees beyond the camp’s official limits.

5. ifo

Ifo is the oldest camp in the Dadaab refugee camp complex. The population of the camp is estimated to exceed 80,000, with Somalis leading the charge. They have been displaced from their country by the civil war.
