What is a duplicate Driving License?

A duplicate driver’s license is a new driver’s license issued to replace a lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed driver’s license. A duplicate license must contain the same information as the original license, including the driver’s name, address, date of birth and driving restrictions.

Requirements for applying for a duplicate driver’s license

  • Valid identification document (ID card for citizens or passport for foreigners)
  • Copy of the Lost/stolen/damaged driving license
  • Police abstract
  • Any other additional documents requested by NTSA

how to Apply for a Duplicate Smart Driving Licence

Step 1: Log in to ecitizen

Log into your ecitizen account or sign up (here is how to create/open an ecitizen account)

Step 2: Apply for an NTSA duplicate driving licence.


Once logged in, click the “Driver license” option from the menu bar and select “Request smart DL copy” from the drop-down menu.

This will display the duplicate Smart DL application form, complete all the mandatory fields correctly, upload a copy of the lost smart DL (if applicable), policy summary and a copy of the document.
After completing the application, click on the “Next” button to proceed to the payment page.

Step 3: Make a payment.


The applicant has to choose the preferred payment method. Payments can be made using alternative payment methods ie through Mobile Online Banking (Mpesa) or Bank.
The new digital driving license fee is Ksh 3,000 and Ksh 50 for convenience fee.

In total, you will have to pay 3050ksh as application fee for the duplicate digital driving license.
Once payment is made, follow the instructions provided and complete the payment.

Make sure you print the payment invoice.

Step 4: Make an appointment at the NTSA office


The applicant will return to the “driver license” dashboard and click “Make an appointment”.

Select a date and time when you can visit the nearest NTSA office.

Step 5: Visit the NTSA office.

On the day of your appointment, go to your nominated NTSA office with your printed invoice.

Here, NTSA staff will use the NTSA computer system to verify your biometric information if you are registered.

Step 6: Get a digital driving license


Once the process is successful, applicants will be notified when the duplicate driver’s license will be ready for collection.

Usually, it will take one month for a duplicate digital driving license or a new smart driving license to be ready for collection.

When collecting the duplicate digital driver’s license, the applicant will need to produce their identity document which will be endorsed by the NTSA dispatch officer.

Step 7: How to view your application status


Using a browser, open the NTSA web portal using the NTSA Citizen Service Portal.

Login by filling in the credentials and password or create a new NTSA TIMS account if you are a new user.
After successfully logging in, go to the dashboard and click on the “driver license” option from the menu bar.
This will display all the applications applied and you will be able to see the status of the driving license applied recently.
