KEMRI DNA Testing Charges

This article is about KEMRI DNA Testing Charges. Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is a government institution established in 1979 to carry out medical research. Since its interception, KEMRI has been able to play an important role in the fight against known diseases such as malaria, pneumonia, meningitis, HIV and malnutrition. Among the services offered by KEMRI is the identification of human DNA. This is done in their state of the art laboratory. The DNA test is usually performed for legal or personal knowledge. There are several DNA testing centers in Kenya, offering alternatives to Kemri.

A legal DNA test requires a process of documentation of the custody chain to ensure that the results are legally defended in a court of justice.

A legal DNA test also requires an impartial third party in the lab to take the sample. Additionally, individuals tested are positively identified by providing government-issued ID.

A DNA test done for personal knowledge is less stringent than a legal one.

Types of DNA tests

KEMRI offers testing services for family relationship testing, individual DNA profiling, and forensic DNA analysis. Family relationship tests can be for a paternity test, a motherhood test, or a sisterhood test.

Why DNA test?

A DNA paternity test determines whether a tested man is the biological father of a tested child, while a DNA maternity test determines whether a tested woman is the biological mother of a tested child. In the recent past, maternity testing has helped solve cases of baby swapping in hospitals.

The brotherhood test can be full or half; The full sibling test is performed with two presumed half-siblings with or without a common parent, while the half-sibling test is performed with two presumed half-siblings with or without common parents.

forensic dna

Forensic DNA testing is primarily used to identify victims of natural disasters, find a suspect, and solve crimes such as rape and incest.

individial dna

Individual DNA profiling is performed by individuals who choose to obtain records of their DNA profiles in case identification is needed in the future. This may be done to safeguard legitimate heirs, avoid costly exhumations if your DNA profiling may be required in the future, or as a precaution for any future identification/verification requirements e.g. in cases of kidnapping, accidental death, act of terrorism.

KEMRI takes 5-10 business days to process test results
